Storytime
We're making a few changes to our Storytime program format for 2010. This program will now be open to children ages 4-7 and feature stories, games, songs, and craft projects. It will be held on the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7PM. For September, Janice Johnston of Community Volunteers in Action will be presenting a program on safety. For the craft project, each child will have the opportunity to create their 'Favorite Pumpkin' which will then be entered into the contest being held in conjunction with the Frackville Pumpkin Festival. For more information or to register call the library at 874-3382. You can also register on-line on the Calendar page at www.frackvillelibrary.com.

Make a Splash-READ!
It's time for our annual summer reading program, and this year, it's all about the H2O. Our theme is water, and we've got three exciting watery subjects for June, July, and August. In June we'll talk about the science of water and do some fun experiments. In July, it's all about the beach and ocean. In August, we'll switch to fresh water and take a walk around the pond. These programs feature stories, great craft projects, and lots of interactive games and activities. In addition, we'll be encouraging all of our attendees to log their personal reading for the summer months. A free bag of goodies will be awarded to each child at the end of the program. Check out our new library calendar to get more details. You can even register on-line! Come join us and Make a Splash yourself.

Chess Anyone?

Since many of our original Chess Club members are heading off to college, our chess co-ordinator, Dr. Z., has been looking out for fresh talent. If you are age 10 years or younger, you can join in our special sessions on Thursdays at 6PM and learn to play. Chess is a very old game, played around the world. It is not only fun and challenging , but it also teaches you how to think. And there's also something to be said for making new friends with a shared interest. So if you'd like to join our group, call us at 874-3382 for information or to register, or use our contact page at www.frackvillelibrary.com.  And if you're not sure, come anyway and 'check' it out!

Meet Mo Willems
Who's Mo Willems, you ask? In the world of picture books, he's quite a celebrity. Willems began his writing career on Sesame Street, and won several Emmy Awards for his efforts. In libraries, he is best known for two series of easy picture books which have become great favorites with young readers. The Pigeon, a hot dog loving bird with lots of attitude, won Willems a Caldecott Honor for Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! Then there's Knuffle Bunny, the favorite stuffed toy of young Trixie, a little girl living in New York City. The delightful drawings of Trixie and her family coupled with real photographs makes for an interesting and unusual approach in Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale and Knuffle Bunny Too.  Check out the work of Mo Willems at your library.

Oh, Baby!
Last week, the library reorganized it's Children's Section with some great new purchases, which Library Director Joan Farrell obtained through a grant. Many of the items and materials are designed to appeal especially to mothers and very young children. These include a nice carpet for crawling, interactive toys, and lots of  quality board books and teaching DVD's like the Baby Einstein series. It's a great new area for moms who have kids of various ages-babies and toddlers can play while their older siblings look for books or attend programs. Come see it !
